JOURNALISTIC ESSAY
REFUGEE CRISIS:
THE STORY MISSING FROM MEDIA COVERAGE
As I wrote for Nonviolence magazine, witnessing the realities of refugees in person is vastly different than “witnessing” their humanitarian crises in the media. My 2,000+ word article reflected situations I observed in Kos, Greece, in 2015.
Nothing you see in the news can adequately prepare you for the up-close experience of witnessing a rubber raft packed with 40 to 50 people, including babies, suddenly appear out of the early morning darkness and land at the shore, just a few feet from where you stand.
